EnTanglements 2023

Agata created a series of unique screen prints of basalt fiber on handmade Nepalese paper. Borrowing titles from philosopher and quantum physicist Karen Barad, Agata created Entanglements in response to her research into podoconiosis. Podoconiosis, or podo for short, is a little-known tropical disease found across three continents in regions of Africa, Central America, and Asia. It manifests as massive swelling of the feet, leading to profound lower leg disfigurement and consequent physical disability. The affected countries share both volcanic history and shoe poverty.

By examining basalt, which underlies and enriches the volcanic soils of endemic areas, Agata investigates and narrates material entanglements, exploring the connection from volcanic eruption to the formation of basalt and its release of minerals.
In Entanglements, she creates a story of material interconnection that unfolds.
